Building in the desert poses the greatest design challenge I've ever experienced: no context whatsoever. The only thing one can - and has to - react to is the extreme climate.
The given task of a luxury hotel in the Arabian desert of Khor-Al-Adaid included a large and detailed programmatic configuration yet no other restrictions. I opted for a contemporary interpretation of the vernacular caravansary with its surrounding tents by building a solid core that structurally dissolves into the desert and implementing the ingenious technology of ancient wind-towers.
